Just last week, Obopay hired Spencer Fong as our new Vice President of Engineering. He is capable and experienced and will really help the company continue its thought leadership in the sphere of mobile finances. But don’t just take my word for it… here is a short biography written by our own President Gregory Holmes:
Spencer brings a wealth of experience and a strong track record of accomplishment to the Obopay team. He has over 23 years in the technology arena –in engineering, architecture, product development, integration and much more. Notably, much of Spencer’s career has been in financial services, having held positions at Intuit, Teknowledge Corporation, Edify Corporation, Charles Schwab and IBM. Over the years, he has also accumulated 7 patents to his credit.
Most recently, Spencer served as the VP of Engineering for Digital Insight, an Intuit company, where he led the design, architecture, development and management of Intuit’s next generation online banking software for financial institutions, consumers and small businesses.
Prior to Intuit, Spencer served as VP of Engineering for Teknowledge Corporation, where he had responsibility for the Tekportal line, utilized by financial institutions and processors for ACH transfer, OFX, Identity Solutions, Account Opening and general Business Banking functions.
Spencer received his Masters Degree in Computer Science from Stanford and holds a B.S. in Computer Science & Mathematics from U.C. Davis.
Our CFO, Dave Johnson, had an interview with Fox Business this morning at 6:30EST! He talked about a bunch of stuff that’s very important to us, like Citi, our India plans, as well as Obopay’s future and global expansion. Check out the video here:
One of the best and most convenient ways to use our service (which only cost you 10 cents to send, no cost to receive by the way) is for parents to send money to their kids. I accidentally ran across this cartoon yesterday:
Ok fine. I know the cartoon above doesn’t always apply, but the principle is still there right? You can’t always be physically available for your children all the time. What if you are away on a trip and they need money?
Actually, one of our best ways to use Obopay is actually similar to that… for parents to send money to their kids in college. It doesn’t even matter if you are in LA, Boston, San Francisco, or New York. Just type it in your phone and your kids can take it out of their own bank account.
For those of you who are confused, you can check out how you can use Obopay here.
We had an official press release this morning, announcing that we just hired Gregory Holmes as the President of US operations for Obopay.
“Holmes brings to Obopay 20 years of expertise in the payments industry. Prior to Obopay, he served as Senior Vice President of First Data Corporation, where he headed the Premier National Merchant Services team for the company’s largest customers. Holmes also served in senior management roles at First Data Merchant Services, Chase Merchant Services – an alliance between FDMS and JPMorgan Chase – and Visa U.S.A.”
We officially announced that we raised another $20 million worth of funding earlier today.
“Obopay, Inc., the pioneering service provider for payments via mobile phones, recently announced closing of its fourth round of venture funding, raising $20 million, and the addition of two new board members. This latest round of investment builds on Obopay’s enormous momentum in its business and high-profile partnerships.
‘This round of investment builds on Obopay’s proven success in the mobile payments market,’ explained Carol Realini, CEO of Obopay. ‘With our continuing focus on delivering services built on specific feedback from consumers, such as the ability to send money from and receive money to any US bank account, the success of our partnerships and our international expansion, we remain confident in the viability of the American – and global — mobile payments market.’
Essar Communications Holdings Limited, the telecom subsidiary of Essar Global Limited, led the round and current investors, including Alliance Bernstein, ONSET Ventures, Redpoint Ventures, Richmond Management and Richmond Global Cellular, Citi, Societe Generale, Qualcomm, and Promethean participated. New investors included Essar Communications Holdings Limited and Olayan America Corporation, a global investment office of The Olayan Group.”
