If you haven’t caught on to the theme of the day yet, well here it is: iPhone. Specificially the new, highly anticipated 3g iPhone that’s supposed to be announced next week.
Apple has already said that they are expecting to sell 10 million units this year. With reports of iPhone shortage everywhere for the last couple months, obviously they already had something big planned in order for Apple to hit the 10 million target.
Forbes just released an article on how they managed to keep this a secret until now. All the clues are there too:
By May 6, it became clear that AT&T was getting ready for something big, with a blogger publishing an all-hands memo to employees at AT&T stores telling them they couldn’t take vacation time between June 15 and July 12. That news hit amid widespread reports of iPhone shortages in Europe and across the U.S.

I have to add onto my previous entry.
Going back to the big $10 million prize money that we talked about before on our own blog as well as the Google blog, the Locale group actually won $25,000 and is one of the finalists of the big grand prize!
This also totally reminds me of how Google got started. Larry Page and Sergey Brin were both Stanford students at that time. Google was their Ph.D project. One thing let to another, and now you have… Google!
Pretty amazing. I am very curious in seeing how all this will pan out.

Google’s Android mobile system is making an impact on people already. More so on MIT students this time though. An MIT professor recently gave his students an assignment to design a cell phone program (or application I guess) using Google’s Android system.
This is going to totally change the mobile industry. Might be a little early to tell, but It almost sounds like having Linux on your phone. Check out these couple programs:
“One project named GeoLife gives users a way to set to-do lists and get reminders on their phones. Walk by the market, and the device might buzz with a message that you’re supposed to pick up milk. Another effort, named Flare, was designed to help small businesses like pizza shops cheaply track their drivers.
Then there was Locale, which lets users configure their phones to automatically adjust their settings when the devices detect themselves in certain zones. So you might set your phone to automatically go into vibrate mode in the office and silent mode at the movie theater, and ring everywhere else.”
The whole article is on Boston.com.

I know I am a little late on this one, but this will give anyone more incentive to help jump onto the Android bandwagon. According to the official Google blog, Google is offering a $10 million reward for developers that create the best Android applications.
Just to clarify, the $10 million is the total amount that Google has allocated into this project, not like a lottery lump sum. This is the prize breakdown listed on the Android site:
In the Android Developer Challenge I, the 50 most promising entries received by April 14 will each receive a $25,000 award to fund further development. Those selected will then be eligible for even greater recognition via ten $275,000 awards and ten $100,000 awards.
The Android Developers Blog has the first round results already. That’s a lot of money if you ask me. Too bad I don’t know how to program…

Apple iPhone’s world domination continues! Apple and America Movil SAB, the top mobile company in Latin America, announced a partnership to bring the iPhone to Latin America today.
“America Movil SAB, controlled by Mexican billionaire Carlos Slim, said it plans to bring the iPhone to all of its Latin American operations but didn’t offer more details about the arrangement, including whether it would be the exclusive iPhone provider in the targeted countries.” Read the whole article here.
Apple has been planning to sell 10 million iPhones by the end of this year. Given that America Movil has almost 160 million subscribers in multiple countries, I would say that they are on the right track.
