Most of us have heard of 3G by now, or even have a phone that’s 3G. But what’s 4G? I barely even heard of 4G! Given that the iPhone isn’t even 3G yet, 4G sounds like it’s far away.
Wikipedia puts it this way:
4G (also known as Beyond 3G), an abbreviation for Fourth-Generation Communications System, is a term used to describe the next step in wireless communications. A 4G system will be able to provide a comprehensive IP solution where voice, data and streamed multimedia can be given to users on an “Anytime, Anywhere” basis, and at higher data rates than previous generations. There is no formal definition for what 4G is; however, there are certain objectives that are projected for 4G.
These objectives include: that 4G will be a fully IP-based integrated system. This will be achieved after wired and wireless technologies converge and will be capable of providing between 100 Mbit/s and 1 Gbit/s speeds both indoors and outdoors, with premium quality and high security. 4G will offer all types of services at an affordable cost.
I think this is what WiMax is supposed to be. Talking about way into the future…

This is interesting. Speck, one of the biggest online case sellers for phones and laptops, has a whole bunch of iPhone cases on a 50% off sale. Now, obviously, we aren’t advertising or selling iPhone cases here so I am not just trying to give them a free plug. But if you think about it, the iPhone is hot. People are buying them hand over fist. Why would they try to get rid of all the cases?
Of course, I am just reading between the lines here, but could this mean that the new iPhone (as in the 3G iphone) might have a different size as the current one? Or the other possibility is that they are just overstocked on these right now, which could also translate to Apple slowly down sales of the current model and the new one is coming out very soon.
Just making an educated guess…

So much for the iPhone black = the new 3G iPhone as shown on the AT&T site. Supposedly, AT&T said that it was only a “placeholder”.
In case you didn’t get to read the previous article, there was a new “iPhone black” option on the AT&T site today. A lot of people got really excited, thinking that it’s the new 3G iphone that’s rumored to have a black casing (hence the iPhone black).
Anyway, so much for that. It was just a “typo”. Sorry. The error was reported on Gizmodo.

Maybe the rumors aren’t just rumors. 3G iPhone could become a reality very soon. Here’s what MacRumors has to say:
“Earlier today we posted a screenshot on our dedicated iPhone blog (RSS) that claimed to depict a new On/Off option to enable 3G speeds. This new preference was found in the latest iPhone 2.0 Beta 5 distributed to developers. By default, the preference is hidden, but one developer (Chronic Productions) claims to have activated it. We have since confirmed that the text shown is indeed in the iPhone 2.0 Beta firmware, so the screenshot appears to be legitimate.”

AT&T is planning to put some extra shine on the even sleeker new Apple iPhone.

Need more unsubstantiated evidence that the 3G iPhone is near. Good, the Chinese language Commercial Times is quoting sources claiming that Foxconn — the maker of the 1st gen iphone — is ramping up 3G iPhone assembly by “the end of May” to ship 3 million units in June.
