Google joined a handful of other companies by announcing that it is delivering mobile banner ads. Companies that use Google’s AdWords to advertise online now have the option of displaying a banner ad on cell phones instead of simple text. Google includes a text line under each banner identifying it as an advertisement.

Nokia has announced plans to bring support for the Qt toolkit to the Maemo operating system used on Nokia Internet Tablet devices. Nokia is also sponsoring an Ubuntu ARM port.

Apple said Wednesday that second-quarter profits rose over 36 percent to $1.05 billion, or $1.16 per diluted share, on sales of $7.51 billion for the three-month period ended March 29, 2008. The company shipped 2,289,000 Macs, 10,644,000 iPods, and 1,703,000 iPhones.

“Sony Ericsson, the Swedish-Japanese mobile phone maker, said on Wednesday its profits plunged in the first quarter as its average sale price fell due to its reorientation towards low and mid-end phones.
In the first three months of the year, the group registered a net profit of 133 million euros (212 million dollars), down by 47.6 percent from 254 million euros a year earlier.
Sales dipped by 7.6 percent in terms of value to 2.7 billion euros during the period.
Sony Ericsson, the world’s fourth-biggest mobile phone manufacturer, sold 22.3 handsets during the period at an average selling price of 121 euros, compared to 21.8 million at 134 euros last year.”

Late Tuesday, in response to questions from Forbes.com, an Apple spokesman said Apple has agreed to buy a boutique microprocessor design company called PA Semi. The company, which is known for its design of sophisticated, low-power chips, could spell a new future for Apple’s flagship iPhone, and possibly iPod products as well.
