Pioneered by the iPhone and employed by the next wave of iPhone competitors like the Pre, accelerometers detect and measure motion, and enables the screen to change from portrait to landscape mode when the phone is turned on its side. They’re even moving into “dumb” mobile phones.

When the iPhone came out and attracted customers despite not having a physical keyboard, many predicted that the device’s success would be limited. This is an interesting take on why that has proven to not be true, and how Apple’s design strategy may have played into their apparent commitment to not using physical keyboards.

If you’ve been reading IntoMobile carefully, you know about Obopay. They are a mobile payment service provider that got its funding from such companies as Citibank and Nokia Ventures. That fact by itself should be a reason enough to think they’re onto something. At the Mobile Money Summit, I had an opportunity to sit with Obopay’s CEO and founder – Carol L. Realini.
Right from the bat, I could see she’s an extraordinary person. Obopay is her 4th company, and her previous one was in providing technology solutions to financial services companies. Carol said that she was inspired to create Obopay when she was in Africa in a mobile phone store, where she saw how people pay for their pre-paid mobile phone service. At that time, the future founder of Obopay was working for an NGO, supporting entrepreneurs.
Here’s the recap of what I’ve learned from talking with her:
- She emphasized Obopay’s deal with MasterCard that will allows them to reach more banks and financial institutions faster.
- Obopay sees mobile payments as something that needs to work across multiple carriers, to be accessible to all mobile phone users, whether they’re unbanked or no.
- Obopay works with regulators in markets where it conducts business to get all needed licenses. Their solution/service/”the way they operate” is adaptable to all regulatory environments, strict or not.
- They want to work on all platforms, not just mobile – she mentioned they’re working to bring Obopay to social networks. iPhone app is coming this summer and Android till the end of the year.
- Every Obopay user has the same user interface for making and managing his or her mobile payments.
- Obopay has about 200 employees of which about the half is in the U.S. and the other half is in India. The plan is to expand to Western Europe and Africa later in the year.
- In U.S., AT&T (NYSE: T) and Verizon (NYSE: VZ) Wireless are distributing Obopay’s app. In India, they have a “tighter marketing relationship” with Loop and Aircell.
And that’s about all I caught from Carol. She is an inspiring woman and her company is certainly worth watching for. And that’s what we at IntoMobile will keep doing, have no doubts about it…

New research on iPhone and iPod Touch reveals a lot of interesting data. According to AdMob, more than 40% of iPhone and iPod touch users access the Internet more frequently from a mobile device than a computer. The two products have different demographics, and purchasing plans provide some clues to what promotions will be effective for reaching them. More than 70 percent of users on both the iPhone and iPod touch are male. iPhone users are more likely to have children than iPod touch users, most likely due to the age difference in the two groups. 46 percent of iPhone users have children, compared to only 28 percent of iPod touch users. In the next six months, iPhone users plan to purchase clothing (57 percent), entertainment (47 percent), and travel (45 percent), while iPod touch users plan to purchase clothing (61 percent), entertainment (53 percent), and cell phones (36 percent).

iPhone 3g owners received the preceding sms message yesterday afternoon. Turns out “that under certain conditions the new ultracompact Apple USB power adapter’s metal prongs can break off and remain in a power outlet, creating a risk of electric shock.” Apple is offering replacement via orders on their website at http://www.apple.com/support/usbadapter/exchangeprogram/ or through their retail stores starting Oct. 10.

Just yesterday, Apple released iPhone update 2.0.2 which is supposedly designed to improve communications between the smart phone and wireless networks. This is good news considering, since the release of the iPhone 3G on July 11th, there have been nothing but complaints about glitches and poor connectivity and bad battery life.

The bay area-based company didn’t even acknowledge a problem with is phone until two days ago… only after completing the 2.0.2 patch to offer worldwide. And even then, the description of the iPhone issue was vague at best, as Apple spokespeople decline to specify the Apple part that the patch was targeting, whether it be the antenna and amplifier, the radio frequency transceiver, etc. This is a little bit scary in terms of consumer confidence… if they neglected to tell us about this problem until it was solved months later, are there any other significant problems that Apple is keeping under wraps? For more info here’s an article printing an interview with Jennifer Bowcock, Apple spokeswoman.
