Mobile Money Is The Most Important Innovation In Banking In 30 Years

Mobile Money Is The Most Important Innovation In Banking In 30 Years
Mobile Money is reaching a tipping point in the US. I just returned from traveling around the world meeting with bankers discussing their successes with mobile. All the bankers I talked to are working on mobile banking. But it isn’t just about the rest of world anymore – it’s happening here in the US as well and it is changing everything.
Today Obopay announced a new offering, Mobile Money for Banks. US banks are beginning to understand how big and transformational mobile will be for their business. And Obopay has developed a bank offering that benefits from our innovation on three continents. It gives the banks what they need to have a strong innovative offering and provides it in a way that they can do a very fast, low cost implementation with a complete mobile money transaction set. 1 month to advanced bank branded mobile money which includes mobile applications, web widgets, and most sought after consumer use cases. Mobile payments have reached a tipping point.
The offering is way beyond bank transfer (repackaging ACH) and traditional niche P2P services.  It includes a number of industry firsts for mobile payments, all based on successful use cases we have experienced: the ability for small sellers and cash based merchants to get paid through mobile phone, website or email; instant payments from one family member to another; and P2Ps that are instant and optimized for a mobile experience. Analysts and our primary research confirms that banks must act now to implement a mobile payment program or risk losing this revenue stream to their competitors or non –traditional providers like Paypal, Apple or Mobile Carriers. With Mobile Money for Banks we are giving them the ability to lead not follow.
It is also the culmination of years of experience and these products are a natural extension of our company strategy, since we have been working with banks some time now. Thus far the response has been very positive as we have shared the details with our banks, channel partners like MasterCard and FIS, and with press and analysts.
We have heard the message from our banking partners regarding what they really want – and we have provided it :
Bank branded and controlled
Easy and swift implementation
Inexpensive solution
I am really excited about the market opportunity and our new offering. Mobile Money will be $630B market according to Jupiter by 2014 – and mobile has a track record of being faster and bigger than anyone ever predicts. Proud of our offering and excited to work with banks.

Nokia gives Obopay a boost

“The announcement on Wednesday by Nokia, the world’s largest cell-phone maker, that it will launch a mobile-payments service is likely to give a competitive leg-up to Obopay Inc., the Redwood City, Calif.-based mobile-payments processor that developed the software for the new venture, called Nokia Money.”

The article noted Nokia’s news release’s stating that the service will be open and interoperable with other payment services, and that it will run on other manufacturers’ handsets.  According to Realini, “In all cases, their [Nokia’s] service commitment is bigger than handsets…..there’s nothing about our relationship that would prevent us from having an offering on other people’s handsets.”

In the article Realini also said that Obopay was making good progress abroad and that with the possible exception of Kenya, no mobile-payments provider had locked up any country yet, and compared the potential to that of the Internet in 1993: “There’s just a huge amount of opportunity.”

What Is an Obol?

800px-DemetriusObol

Obo is short for obolus, an ancient Greek coin.

Have you ever wondered why we’re called Obopay?  The word “obo” is based on the Greek word for a type of ancient coin — the obolus or obol.  Back in those days, money was split up into many fractions of weights and measures, which would’ve been quite cumbersome compared to today’s streamlined processes. The word obolos also referred to a metal rod, which was sometimes used as currency.

Carol Realini, Obopay’s founder, says she appreciates this aspect of money history:  “I was inspired to name Obopay after the Obol because I wanted to recognize history in naming something entirely new.”

The world has obviously come a long way when it comes to the shape of money! In the digital age, it makes sense to send money with the thing that we all carry around the most — our mobile phones.

You could say that yesterday’s coins have become today’s mobile.

Sending Money to Loved Ones Overseas

I just ran across this article a little earlier today.  Sorry, I know it was written a couple months ago, but it’s still good regardless.  Apparently, UK has been trying to make sending money to family and friends much safer for everything by creating a new customer charter for money transfer companies.

As you can imagine, getting the funds safely overseas is a major concern for everyone.  The UK Department for International Development writes:

People in the UK send an estimated £2.3 billion a year to loved ones in over 50 developing countries – a key source of overseas funds for many economies. Yet many find the process difficult and insecure.

Charges vary widely and the total cost to send £100 to some countries can range from less than £4 to as much as £40.

You can see the article here.

They decided to start a site called http://www.sendmoneyhome.org, aimed to allow “consumers to search international payment companies and compare transfer methods, costs, and speed of transfer.”

So next time you want to send money overseas, make sure you do some homework first.   When it comes to money, especially with your family and friends, there’s nothing better than having a peace of mind that your funds will get there safely.

iPhone 3G for 1 Euro?

T-Mobile in Germany announced that they will sell you the 8GB iPhone 3G for 1 euro if you have a contract that cost 69 euros or more. That comes out to be a little more than $100 a month for the monthly contract.

That’s some genius marketing. They give you the phone for free basically, but requires you to pay more for the contract so they can make the money back in the long run. That’s a great selling point though… “Get your new iPhone for 1 euro!”

Send Money to Your Loved Ones

One of the best and most convenient ways to use our service (which only cost you 10 cents to send, no cost to receive by the way) is for parents to send money to their kids.  I accidentally ran across this cartoon yesterday:

Ask mom for money cartoon

Ok fine.  I know the cartoon above doesn’t always apply, but the principle is still there right?  You can’t always be physically available for your children all the time.  What if you are away on a trip and they need money?

Actually, one of our best ways to use Obopay is actually similar to that… for parents to send money to their kids in college.  It doesn’t even matter if you are in LA, Boston, San Francisco, or New York.  Just type it in your phone and your kids can take it out of their own bank account.

For those of you who are confused, you can check out how you can use Obopay here.
