What is Obopay?

Ok. We have been talking about cell phones, iphones, Blackberries, and a bunch of tech stuff here for over 2 months now. I bet some of you stumble upon our site randomly, not knowing what we actually do, so I decided that we should explain (and introduce) ourselves a little bit.

In a one liner, Obopay lets you transfer money to anyone in the US – fast and secure. Plain and simple.

You can use our product online on our website, from AOL Instant Messenger, SMS, our Obopay application on your cell phone, or even through our WAP page at (http://wap.obopay.com). It doesn’t even matter what bank you and I use. I can have my money in Bank of America and you have Citibank, HSBC, Wells Fargo… it really doesn’t matter. I can send money to you easily and you get it fast.

Doesn’t get easier than that.

United Bank for Africa Introduces Dual Currency Debit Card

United Bank of Africa announced today that they are going to issue a dual currency debit card. The card is going to work in “both Naira and in US dollars at domestic and international locations”. Read the whole article here .

“This is the best thing that has happened to customers in recent times as they do not need to carry multiple cards for different purposes especially when they travel out of the country arises”, Executive Director, Global Products and Segment Banking, Mrs. Angela Nwabuoku was quoted to have said.

This is actually pretty cool if you think about it. You don’t have to worry about changing currencies when you travel anymore. Just bring the card with you everywhere you go. AND it’s actually a Visa card, so you get all the Visa protection as well!

Google Offers $10 Million Reward for Android Developers

I know I am a little late on this one, but this will give anyone more incentive to help jump onto the Android bandwagon. According to the official Google blog, Google is offering a $10 million reward for developers that create the best Android applications.

Just to clarify, the $10 million is the total amount that Google has allocated into this project, not like a lottery lump sum. This is the prize breakdown listed on the Android site:

In the Android Developer Challenge I, the 50 most promising entries received by April 14 will each receive a $25,000 award to fund further development. Those selected will then be eligible for even greater recognition via ten $275,000 awards and ten $100,000 awards.

The Android Developers Blog has the first round results already. That’s a lot of money if you ask me. Too bad I don’t know how to program…

Apple iPhone Expanding to Latin America

Apple iPhone’s world domination continues! Apple and America Movil SAB, the top mobile company in Latin America, announced a partnership to bring the iPhone to Latin America today.

“America Movil SAB, controlled by Mexican billionaire Carlos Slim, said it plans to bring the iPhone to all of its Latin American operations but didn’t offer more details about the arrangement, including whether it would be the exclusive iPhone provider in the targeted countries.” Read the whole article here.

Apple has been planning to sell 10 million iPhones by the end of this year. Given that America Movil has almost 160 million subscribers in multiple countries, I would say that they are on the right track.

Hong Kong Octopus Card

For those are you who aren’t familiar with the Octopus card, here’s how Wikipedia describes it to be:

“The Octopus card is a rechargeable contactless stored value smart card used to transfer electronic payments in online or offline systems in Hong Kong. Originally launched in September 1997 to collect fares for the city’s mass transit system, the Octopus card system has since grown into a widely used payment system for virtually all public transport in Hong Kong. It is also used for payment at convenience stores, supermarkets, fast-food restaurants, on-street parking meters, car parks, and other point-of-sale applications such as service stations and vending machines.”

Read the article on Wikipedia.

This card is pretty amazing.  The card is magnetic so you don’t even need to take it out of your pocket.  Just swipe your purse or wallet across the reader and you are good to go.

You can use the Octopus card just about everywhere in Hong Kong.  I believe it first started with the MTR, the super convenient subway system in Hong Kong, and then it expanded to just about all other forms of public transportation.  I’ve been told that you can even buy groceries with it too!

Talk about way of the future.  This essentially eliminates having to carry cash around.  Just imagine if you can do everything from your phone, then you don’t even need to carry a card around!

17-year-old Girl Makes $70,000 a Month Via Myspace

Ashely Qualls is a regular girl. That is if you consider regular to be an internet mogul by the time you’re a junior in highschool.

Ashely is indeed living the good life. Her website, whateverlife, has earned her approx. 1 million dollars. It recieves nearly 7 million unique visitors per month, resulting in 60 million page views. Ashley is true to the entrepreneurial spirit, keeping control of her company despite offers of 1.5 million and the car of her choice.

So what does Ashely sell to make all this money? Nothing. The products are absolutely free. Page designs for myspace are yours for the picking, free of charge. The money she makes is predominantly from Google Adsense and Valueclick.

Now that she’s dropped out of highschool and bought her own house, Ashely is attempting to emancipate herself to gain control of her company’s finances. Courts ruled to let neither Ashley nor her parents control the money made from the company, she must appeal to gain funds outside her set budget. She only has until next summer before she turns 18, so either way she will be faced with economic freedom most of us can only dream about very shortly.

It’s a testament to the oppurtunity of the internet, regarless of location, size, age, or experience.

For those of you who are curious of what the site looks like, here it is.

Does Intelligence = Wealth?

According to Jay Zagorsky’s study published in the journal Intelligence, it’s not likely.

Not only was there a little-to-insignificant correlation between higher earning and a higher I.Q, but there appears to be an increase in debt and bankruptcy among those with above average intelligence quotients. The finding comes as an interesting surprise in a culture where bespectacled Bill Gates is the supreme beacon of cash, and college = success.

The study is by no means conclusive, and my main beef with the outcome is the fact that all statistics were formed based on the use of Intelligence Quotient numbers (I.Q). More and more people are realizing that standardized tests fail to capture the true intelligence of many people who harbor smarts other than the bookish variety. Even the founder of the test, frenchman Alfred Binet , protests that the quiz does not adequately and permanently determine a person’s intelligence:

“The scale, properly speaking, does not permit the measure of intelligence, because intellectual qualities are not superposable, and therefore cannot be measured as linear surfaces are measured”

While the I.Q test attempts to fix a number to a thing that we have not yet been able to concretely measure, and may be perhaps the best resource for a study of this kind, it’s my suspicion that the I.Q test is outdated and in many cases unfair, as well as a poor reflection of actual intelligence in all people.

Maybe the measure of intelligence is the reason for the lack of correlation, not the actual smarts themselves? I wouldn’t doubt it.
