Going to back to my previous article, I started thinking about how this is going to impact the mobile space in China. Like I said before, a mobile company selling off its CDMA unit… that just sounds weird, at least initially.
However, this deal is supposed to help everyone to compete with China Mobile at the end. For those of you who don’t know much about China Mobile, they are actually the world’s largest mobile provider (at least based on the number of subscribers). According to Wikipedia, they have over 380 million subscribers! To put it into perspective, AT&T Wireless “only” has 71.4 million customers. On numbers alone, China Mobile has 5 times more customers than AT&T Wirless.
Anyway, back to China Unicom and China Telecom. AP business writer Jeremiah Marquez wrote:
The deals could help China Unicom and China Telecom compete with the country’s cell phone heavyweight, China Mobile, the world’s largest mobile provider by subscribers. China Telecom could expand its new mobile business with its current fixed-line customers; China Unicom could grow its current mobile business with the new fixed-line subscribers.
It’ll be interesting to see how this race will turn out. Even the Chairman for China Unicom knows that catching China Mobile is going to be hard.
“It’s hard to say when the new company will become the largest mobile operator in China,” he told reporters. “Frankly, I still believe there is a significant gap between the new company and China Mobile.”
Like I said before, it will be very interesting to see how all of this is going to play out. Just in case you didn’t read the article yet, it’s right here.

China Unicom announced two big deals today. It actually took me a couple times to understand what happened. To sum it up, here they are:
- They aquired China Netcom Group Corp. Ltd, a fixed line provider, for about US$23.8 billion.
- They would sell their CDMA mobile network and related business to China Telecom, China’s largest fixed line operator, for US$15.86 billion.
It sounds kinda weird when I first read it. I mean, why would a mobile company buy a fixed line company and sell their CDMA mobile business? (Wow that was confusing.) Almost seems like it doesn’t make much sense.
Apparently, the government demanded it. China has been demanding their big 6 telecom companies to be combined into 3 groups.
The moves were expected as part of a government-mandated shake up of China’s telecommunications sector unveiled late last month. That plan called for the country’s six telecom companies to combine into three groups in a bid to create a more competitive industry and prevent a dominant operator from monopolizing the market.

Going to my previous post about 4G, the founder of Japanese broadband Internet and wireless company eAccess Ltd came out and predicted today that WiMax is going to lose the 4G battle.
Actually, his predictions are pretty bold. He even said that CDMA is going to lose out AND he came out and criticized the iPhone! Yes, the iPhone!
So what’s his prediction? LTE (Long Term Evolution). I guess we will find out in a couple years if he’s right or not.

Vodafone, one of the biggest carriers in Europe, announced today that they are buying ZYB, a Danish mobile social network for 31.5 million Euros today.
This is what Techcrunch had to say about ZYB:
“ZYB was smart in how they built their service. At first they were a simple address book backup-to-web service. But they realized they had a very complete social graph from the data (who’s closer to you than the people you call frequently on your mobile phone)? So they launched a mobile social network on the back of the original service.”
Just like what we believe here in Obopay, mobile is the way of the future!

It’s official. Just like everything else, once it gets on The Wall Street Journal, it gotta be real! Here’s a part of the article from The Wall Street Journal:
Research In Motion Ltd. plans to introduce a touch-screen version of its BlackBerry device, according to people familiar with the matter, answering the challenge posed by the popularity of Apple Inc.’s iPhone. Read the article on The Wall Street Journal.
The bottom line? Just wait everyone, the Blackberry 9500, aka the Blackberry 9500, aka Verizon Thunder (I guess it could be Vodafone Thunder too, since they are getting that in Europe) is on its way! Just to recap, the Blackberry Thunder is supposed to have a touchscreen, just like the iPhone. For more info on the phone as well as the potential picture, you can read our old entries.

EarthLink had a vision to build a citywide WiFi network, so they decided to do it in Philadelphia. Tons of people thought that it was an awesome idea. I mean, a city full of Wifi network sounds pretty cool right?
They expected at least 100,000 people to sign up, and only about 6,000 did. “EarthLink said it is losing up to $200,000 a month operating the network because subscriber fees covered less than half the company’s costs.” Earthlink also signed a 10 year contract with the city. Now it seems like they will fight it over in court.
