Google Android Project Becoming MIT Students’ Homework

Google’s Android mobile system is making an impact on people already. More so on MIT students this time though. An MIT professor recently gave his students an assignment to design a cell phone program (or application I guess) using Google’s Android system.

This is going to totally change the mobile industry. Might be a little early to tell, but It almost sounds like having Linux on your phone. Check out these couple programs:

“One project named GeoLife gives users a way to set to-do lists and get reminders on their phones. Walk by the market, and the device might buzz with a message that you’re supposed to pick up milk. Another effort, named Flare, was designed to help small businesses like pizza shops cheaply track their drivers.

Then there was Locale, which lets users configure their phones to automatically adjust their settings when the devices detect themselves in certain zones. So you might set your phone to automatically go into vibrate mode in the office and silent mode at the movie theater, and ring everywhere else.”

IPCS sues Sprint over proposed Clearwire deal

Sprint reported a little while ago that they are officially joining into the Clearwire WiMax venture. In fact, I actually wrote about it.  The bloggers at Google wrote about the partnership a couple days ago too.

However, IPCS Inc, an affiliate of Sprint Nextel Corp, said yesterday that “three of its subsidiaries have sued Sprint over its plans to create a venture with Clearwire Corp.”

And what is IPCS? “IPCS, which sells wireless services under the Sprint brand with coverage for a potential 12 million customers in states such as Illinois and Iowa, said it has the exclusive right to sell services under the Sprint brand in 81 markets.” (For the whole article, you can read it on Reuter.)

From what I read from various places, analysts have already predicted that some problems will arise from this Clearwire pact between all these big companies.  Seems like that’s already beginning.

Microsoft’s Hotmail, Live Messenger Head To BlackBerry

“Microsoft and Research in Motion announced Monday that consumer e-mail and instant messaging services from Microsoft would be available on BlackBerry mobile devices later this summer. The move demonstrates both that BlackBerrys aren’t just for business messaging anymore and that Microsoft isn’t depending only on Windows Mobile for its mobile strategy.”  Read the article as reported on Information Week.

Sounds like a win-win for both Microsoft and Blackberry…

Telecom firms say SW China quake hurts power for networks

Most of us have heard about the tragedy in China the last couple days. China is not like California. Their buildings aren’t earthquake ready like the ones over here. The death toll is now at over 12,000, according to what I last read.

In addition to people dying, it has been reported that:

Monday’s strong earthquake in southwest China has damaged power supplies to local telecommunications facilities, which affected cell phone services, network operators said here.

According to China Mobile’s branch in Sichuan, about 2,300 local base stations stopped operating due to power shutdowns and transmission failures caused by the quake and three switching stations were congested.” You can read the rest of the article here.

I read that lots of people still can’t contact their loved ones because the heavy volume of calls that are coming in and out, as well as the stations being out of service. We really hope that things will turn out ok and people can reunite with their families soon.

Apple iPhone Black Rumors Smashed Down by AT&T

So much for the iPhone black = the new 3G iPhone as shown on the AT&T site. Supposedly, AT&T said that it was only a “placeholder”.

In case you didn’t get to read the previous article, there was a new “iPhone black” option on the AT&T site today. A lot of people got really excited, thinking that it’s the new 3G iphone that’s rumored to have a black casing (hence the iPhone black).

Anyway, so much for that. It was just a “typo”. Sorry. The error was reported on Gizmodo.
