Demand for seamless mobile web access drives desire for broadband cloud

Consumers increasingly want web access everywhere – but how can it happen with the existing wide variety of networks?    This is “driving the technology world to try to figure out how to build the equivalent of a bandwidth cloud composed of a variety of available networks, from cellular to Wi-Fi and WiMAX,” says Stacy Higginbottom at GigaOm.  Speakers at a recent Portable Computer and Communications Association meeting described how this problem is being addressed by  various services and software companies.   Barbara Nelson, CTO of iPass, discusses the challenges here:http://gigaom.com/2009/06/24/biggest-barriers-to-seamless-mobile-connectivity/

WiMax to Lose the 4G Battle?

wimax-to-lose-the-4g-battle

Going to my previous post about 4G, the founder of Japanese broadband Internet and wireless company eAccess Ltd came out and predicted today that WiMax is going to lose the 4G battle.

Actually, his predictions are pretty bold.  He even said that CDMA is going to lose out AND he came out and criticized the iPhone!  Yes, the iPhone!

So what’s his prediction?  LTE (Long Term Evolution).  I guess we will find out in a couple years if he’s right or not.

We know 3G, but what’s 4G?

we-know-3g-but-whats-4g

Most of us have heard of 3G by now, or even have a phone that’s 3G. But what’s 4G? I barely even heard of 4G!  Given that the iPhone isn’t even 3G yet, 4G sounds like it’s far away.

Wikipedia puts it this way:

4G (also known as Beyond 3G), an abbreviation for Fourth-Generation Communications System, is a term used to describe the next step in wireless communications. A 4G system will be able to provide a comprehensive IP solution where voice, data and streamed multimedia can be given to users on an “Anytime, Anywhere” basis, and at higher data rates than previous generations. There is no formal definition for what 4G is; however, there are certain objectives that are projected for 4G.

These objectives include: that 4G will be a fully IP-based integrated system. This will be achieved after wired and wireless technologies converge and will be capable of providing between 100 Mbit/s and 1 Gbit/s speeds both indoors and outdoors, with premium quality and high security. 4G will offer all types of services at an affordable cost.

I think this is what WiMax is supposed to be.  Talking about way into the future…

IPCS sues Sprint over proposed Clearwire deal

Sprint reported a little while ago that they are officially joining into the Clearwire WiMax venture. In fact, I actually wrote about it.  The bloggers at Google wrote about the partnership a couple days ago too.

However, IPCS Inc, an affiliate of Sprint Nextel Corp, said yesterday that “three of its subsidiaries have sued Sprint over its plans to create a venture with Clearwire Corp.”

And what is IPCS? “IPCS, which sells wireless services under the Sprint brand with coverage for a potential 12 million customers in states such as Illinois and Iowa, said it has the exclusive right to sell services under the Sprint brand in 81 markets.” (For the whole article, you can read it on Reuter.)

From what I read from various places, analysts have already predicted that some problems will arise from this Clearwire pact between all these big companies.  Seems like that’s already beginning.

Intel buys license for Sweden-wide WiMax network

Intel reportedly paid $26 million to buy a 15 year license to operate in Sweden.  They are aiming to, and most likely will, make profit from selling WiMax-enabled computer chips that will be used in many products.  There are 4 other winners in the Sweden WiMax sweepstakes as well.  Check out the whole story here.

For those of you who are not familiar with WiMax, this new technology is supposed to bring internet to just about everywhere.  Imagine the small wireless internet network that you have at home being 1000000 times bigger.  From what I was told, this is like WiFi that goes on for miles and probably faster too.  I can’t even imagine…

Sprint and cable companies form $14.5 billion Clearwire venture for WiMax

Sprint and a bunch of other big companies, like Google and Comcast, are joining together to build a WiMax network that’s will provide enough coverage for a whole city supposedly. “WiMax promises to blanket entire cities with Web access for laptops, cell phones and other consumer devices at fast speeds. Clearwire aims to offer WiMax in a service area covering as many as 140 million people by the end of 2010.” Read the article here.
